You can get 10 additional points to the class assessment for doing the following assignment
related to the lecture on Social problems of Global South.
Extent: 400-600 words
Always please indicate what problem and in which region you are discussing. No need to
refer to literature, this is more about your approach to the problem (of course you can base it
on resources, but unlike seminar paper, this time it is not necessary).

Assignment:
Choose one of the social problems discussed in the lecture PFD – problems related to
population, ethnicity, religion, crime and drugs or socio-economic inequality – and one
country or region of Global South.
What do you see as the biggest problem of the country/region in the selected area of
social problems of Global South? Propose some solution of the selected problem in the
selected region.
Examples:
1. You are interested in socio-economic inequalities in Latin America. Discuss why they
occur and how can the socio-economic inequalities in the region be solved.
2. You want to analyze the role of religion/ethnicity in a selected conflict in Africa (e.g.
Rwanda, Nigeria, Somalia…). What is the role of religion/ethnicity in the country?
Does it cause conflicts or is the country able to manage its religious/ethnic diversity?
3. You want to analyze the impact of population ageing on China/Korea or other
country of Global South. How is the selected country approaching the problem?
4. You want to focus on drug problem in selected country/region (e.g. Mexico,
Columbia, Afghanistan, Philippines etc.). Why is the country having problems with
drugs? What solution can be applied to solve the problem?
5. Any other combination of countries/regions and social problems in Global South.
