Již v průběhu roku 1990 započal boj o právo na otevření komunistických archivů, primárně stranických archivů a archivů bezpečnostních složek, zejména Státní bezpečnosti. Nakládání s těmito tajnými dokumenty nebylo dlouho nijak upraveno. Určitou změnu přinesl zákon o otevření některých svazků z roku 1996, další z roku 2002, respektive 2007. Teprve po vzniku Ústavu pro studium totalitních režimů a Archivu bezpečnostních složek byly k 1. únoru 2008 otevřeny v podstatě všechny archivní fondy a sbírky bývalých komunistických bezpečnostních složek.

Already in the course of 1990, the struggle for the right to open communist archives, primarily party archives and archives of security forces, especially the State Security, began. The handling of these secret documents has not been regulated for a long time. The law on the opening of some volumes from 1996, another from 2002 and 2007, respectively, brought a certain change. Only after the establishment of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Security Services Archive were, as of 1 February 2008, virtually all the archives and collections of the former communist security forces were opened.
