V souvislosti se snahou o nápravu zločinů spáchaných představiteli československého totalitního režimu v letech 1948 - 1989, stejně jako utváření právního státu, se začaly vyšetřovat komunistické zločiny. Hlavním gestorem tohoto vyšetřování se v roce 1995 stal Úřad dokumentace a vyšetřování zločinů komunismu, který navazoval na činnost útvarů zabývající se aktivitami příslušníků Státní bezpečnosti. Vyšetřovatelé a státní zástupci se zaměřily na vyšetřování členů komunistické nomenklatury, vysokých představitelů ministerstva vnitra, Státní bezpečnosti, Pohraniční stráže a dalších zástupců režimu.

In connection with the effort to correct the crimes committed by the representatives of the Czechoslovak totalitarian regime in the years 1948-1989, as well as the formation of the rule of law, communist crimes began to be investigated. The main body responsible for this investigation was the Office for the Documentation and Investigation of the Crimes of Communism in 1995, which followed on from the activities of departments dealing with the activities of members of the State Security. Investigators and prosecutors focused on investigating members of the communist nomenclature, senior officials from the Ministry of the Interior, the State Security, the Border Guard and other representatives of the regime.
