Course objectives (in Czech)
The course systematically analyzes the reasons and consequences of state intervention in the economy. It deals with the typology of interventions and economic justification of arguments for the intervention in the functioning of markets in the regulation of the price and product. It analyzes the impact of monetary policy and taxation. After successful completion students will be able to analyze a wide range of state interventions in the the economy including unintended consequences thereof. Above all, they will gain the ability to - understand the difference between market and bureaucratic management, - identify the structure of the motivation of actors in cases of state intervention, - understand the problem of unintended consequences in specific cases and identify them - consider the difference between proclaimed and real aims of economic policy measures, - identify the effects of interest groups, - understand the dynamics of processes within the public sector.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Economics as a value-free science, methodology of natural and social sciences, economics and politics, ethics and history. Utility theory and welfare economics. Subjectivity of main economic categories, economic coordination, opportunity costs, the theory of exchange, development of welfare economics. Typology of interventions and problems of analysis of their categories. Various cases of regulation of price and product and consequences thereof. onopolies, cartels and their forms, definitions and implications for market system. The theory of discrimination, private vs. public discrimination, discrimination and labor market, price discrimination, anti-discrimination laws and implications thereof. Trade and international trade, tariffs and other trade barriers and their reasons and consequences. The theory of taxation, tax impact and shift, neutral tax, canons of justice.
