Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge about Nordic countries position in international politics since the late 19th century. The course lays stress on security issues and various integration processes closely related to the modern history of the Nordic region. The course shall start with an introduction to the study of politics of the Nordic countries: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Then it deals with important issues related to armed conflicts, including WW 1 and WW 2 and position of Nordic countries within these conflicts. A significant part of the course covers the period of the Cold war. The course follows the Nordic countries integration into various international organizations, including NATOand EU.It deals with key concepts and issues that are especially important for the Nordic countries: Nordic balance, neutrality, ambiguity of European integration idea in Nordic countries. The course puts emphasis on the analysis of the current position of the Nordic countries in international politics. The course also pays attention to significant persons - policy-makers, who helped shape Nordic countries political history.
