Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course intends to introduce the students with the past and current development in the so called „Global South“ (developing countries). Attention will be paid to theoretical questions linked with the Global South and to the individual regions of the Global South. Students will gain a detailed overview of the history and current development and problems in Latin America, Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Asia and Pacific regions. Upon successful compltion of this course students will be able to - understand the basic political and geographical aspects of development of the Global South - understand the basic political, economic, social problems of the Global South - identify the impacts of colonization and postcolonial development to the individual regions of the Global South - understand the current problems and conflicts in Latin America - understand the current problems and conflicts in Africa - understand the current problems and conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa - understand the current problems and conflicts in Asia and Pacific

  • 1. Global South – definition, theories
    2. Colonization and decolonization of Global South and their impact on development of the countries of the Global South
    3. Political problems of Global South – autoritarian regimes vs. democracy, freedom of speech, media freedom, corruption, fragile states
    4. Military problems of Global South – role of armies, regime instability, terrorism, separatism
    5. Economic and environmental problems of Global South – economic development, indebtedness, structural reforms, environmental problems of Global South (water resources, deforestation, desertification…)
    6. Social problems of Global South – ethnicity, population, role of religion, drugs, socioeconomic inequality…
    7. Middle East and North Africa as part of the Global South – main determinants of development, main problems and conflicts in the region
    8. Africa as part of the Global South – main determinants of development, main problems and conflicts in the region
    9. Asia as part of the Global South – main determinants of development, main problems and conflicts in the region
    10. Latin America as part of the Global South – main determinants of development, main problems and conflicts in the region
    11. Great powers and Global South – US, EU, Russia, China, India, Japan and their relation to countries of Global South
    12. International organizations and Global South – UN and regional organizations and Global South, BRICS…
