The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the one-semester course is to introduce students to the basic procedures of professional (scientific) work. By completing the course, the student will gain an idea of the formal (e.g. citations, references to literature, bibliography) and substantive requirements of a professional text, will learn to search for relevant sources and literature (heuristics) to write his/her own qualifying work, will become familiar with working with scientific sources and databases, and will be introduced to the basic methods of scientific work (with a focus on social sciences). The students will also be introduced to the ethics of professional work. Completion of the course is a basic prerequisite for the successful writing and defending of a master's thesis.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - locate and create source relevant bibliographic and other sources, - structure a professional text leading to a master's thesis, - locate and create keywords, - write an annotation and an abstract for a professional text leading to a master's thesis, - create and deliver a presentation on a professional topic, - navigate the law of higher education, - identify the basic moral hazards of professional work.

  • Úvod do studia společenských věd: tradice, specifika, literatura Postupy a metody odborné/vědecké práce Základy heuristiky: práce sodbornou a populárně vědnou literaturou a prameny (používání encyklopedií, slovníků, bibliografií, syntéz, odborných časopisů), jejich vyhledávání. Knihovny, archivy, databáze, on-line zdroje Fáze vědecké/odborné práce, struktura odborného textu. Základní metody odborné práce (např. metoda sondy, statistická metoda, komparace, biografická metoda, ideální typ aj.) Citování, citační úzus, poznámkový aparát Praktické otázky spojené spřípravu vlastního odborného textu (anotace, recenze, referát, magisterská práce).
Teaching methods
Teaching is in the form of exercises/seminars. The basic teaching method is a lecture combined with practical examples of the topics covered.
Assessment methods
Active participation in class is recommended for successful completion of the course. The prerequisite for graduation is the preparation of a presentation on the topic of the future master's thesis (title in Czech and ENG, keywords in Czech and ENG, annotation, abstract, 10 basic topics, structure of the thesis, basic sources and bibliography). The actual exam is in the form of a written test: half of the thesis is in the form of closed test questions, half tests the ability to recognize the type and create a correct bibliographic citation.
